Homo-and transphobia in Europe are issues to take seriously.
There is a need for systematic work around Europe to strengthen awareness of LGBT rights at all levels of society. It’s not about special rights – it’s about equal rights. There is a great need to fight all tendencies to discriminate LGBT people, through legislation and campaigns. The possibility – and right – to have pride parades is a very important part of that fight. It is worrying if the authorities give in to threats of violence, and ban parades. Freedom of assembly is a fundamental component of a democracy, and the government’s task is to ensure the rights of its citizens.
Love, Faith and Hope is the motto, but when I think of the organizers and the LGBT people living in Belgrade, I also think of courage. They are brave strong people who are struggling to influence politicians, authorities and violent hooligans to improve society, but probably also friends and family with prejudices. I hope I get to wish them Happy Pride this Saturday.
